USDN & Center for Regenerative Solutions Awarded $28M from the U.S. Forest Service to Expand Urban & Community Forestry Programs Across the U.S.

Center for Regenerative Solutions (CRS) and Urban Sustainability Directors Network (USDN) have been awarded $28M from the U.S. Forest Service to expand urban and community forestry programs across the U.S.

In this short video, Brett KenCairn (CRS) and Laurene Hamilton (USDN) shared their excitement about this funding, which marks a significant milestone for urban sustainability and regenerative nature-based solutions.

The U.S. Forest Service appointed CRS and USDN as National Pass-Through Partners, and we have been awarded $28 million of the historic $1B in funding from the Inflation Reduction Act to re-grant to communities across the U.S. for Urban & Community Forestry.

This important new funding, announced by USDA last month, will help us continue our vital work supporting communities to expand urban forestry projects, which are pivotal in addressing climate change, fostering equitable access to green spaces, and building resilient communities.

In the near term

The first phase of this IRA investment will go directly to community-level urban forestry programs in 25 cities across the country who have already applied for U.S. Forest Service funding. Our collaborative work with these cities will enhance urban green spaces, expand urban tree canopies, and strengthen community well-being as part of Center for Regenerative Solutions’ climate action as equity-centered community development approach to implementing urban nature-based solutions.

In 2024

A second phase will launch in 2024 and include opportunities for additional communities to apply for grants through USDN and CRS, as well as receive technical assistance and urban forestry implementation guidance through CRS’ Urban Nature-Based Solutions Accelerator. The Urban Heat + Urban Forestry Accelerator helps cities combat urban heat with tree canopy while improving the health and economic resilience of communities, providing a framework that demonstrates how urban forestry can mitigate climate change, improve air quality, and enhance overall urban livability.

This grant is a significant step towards a more sustainable, resilient, and equitable urban future. It wouldn't be possible without the dedication of our network, partners, and supporters. Together, we are sowing the seeds of positive change in our urban environments.

We extend our deepest gratitude to the U.S. Forest Service for their investment in our shared vision. We look forward to collaborating with all stakeholders to make our cities greener, healthier, and more vibrant.

We are excited to continue to work in collaboration with a growing partnership of organizations and community leaders working together to nurture both human communities and urban forests and to grow a more abundant future for all. Join us on this exciting journey towards urban sustainability!
